Welcome to the Bibliothèque Sigmund Freud

Founded by Marie Bonaparte, the Bibliothèque Sigmund Freud (BSF) is a research library specialising in psychoanalysis and the official library of the Société psychanalytique de Paris.

With a collection of over 48,000 items, our library offers a unique and comprehensive archive of books, journals, and brochures, spanning the entire history of psychoanalysis. Nearly a third of our materials are in foreign languages, including more than 2500 books and 42 journals in English. Open to all, the BSF has been dedicated to research, education, and sharing psychoanalytic knowledge for over 90 years.

Our Collection

Our collection spans the history of psychoanalysis, featuring over 48,000 printed items in more than 20 languages. Our catalogue includes works from over 10,000 authors, offering a rich panorama of psychoanalytic thought from its inception to the present day.

  • Current publications: Over 20 active journal subscriptions in print, as well as digital subscriptions to Cairn.info and Pep-web for the latest publications in psychoanalysis.
  • Journals: A rich archive of over 250 journals, many of which are no longer in print. We house a collection of 42 English-language journals, as well as numerous ‘specimens’ – single issues of a journal that are not part of a collection. Among them is the first issue of the American journal Neurotica, bequeathed to the BSF by psychoanalyst Joyce McDougall.
  • Brochures: Over 2,000 documents, including manuscripts, offprints, and typescripts.
  • Our “Grand Corpus”: A selection of authors whose ideas and key works shaped psychoanalytic theory.

Freud at the BSF

We house Freud’s complete works, including all his writings, letters, and biographies, available in French, German, English, Spanish, and Italian. Our collection also includes first editions of landmark texts such as the Traumdeutung (3rd ed.) and a special issue of Le Disque Vert dedicated to Freud, featuring essays by figures like André Breton and Henri Michaux.

Marie Bonaparte Collection

Marie Bonaparte, a key figure in psychoanalysis and a close collaborator of Sigmund Freud, founded the library in 1934 and left a personal collection of 1,300 volumes to the Société psychanalytique de Paris. This unique collection includes many works annotated by Bonaparte herself, as well as inscriptions from authors such as Freud, Ferenczi and Rank.
