Parenting Psychoanalysed: Letters to a Parent

By South African Psychoanalytical Association (SAPA)

The new book, “Parenting Psychoanalysed: Letters to a Parent”, was published in May 2025 by Routledge and edited by Andy Cohen, with contributions from 39 psychoanalysts from around the world.

The book is an unprecedented collection of candid letters from 39 psychoanalysts reflecting on parenthood. Written simply and personally, each letter blends professional insight with emotional honesty, exploring the unexpected joys and struggles of parenting, the inner conflicts children evoke, and the hidden truths most parenting books overlook. This international volume opens a meaningful dialogue with mothers, fathers and caregivers, inviting them to reflect on how their inner worlds, worries and wishes matter deeply: holding important clues about how to parent in an open and authentic way.
