European COWAP Team – 2026 Programme

Dear Colleagues,

The IPA Committee on Women and Psychoanalysis (COWAP) has begun with a new team at the start of the 2025-2029 mandate. This committee is part of the Professional, Scientific, and Educational Group of IPA Committees. The main strategic goal of the group of committees is "to foster scientific development and learning, and the maintenance of high professional standards."

COWAP was founded in 1998 to create a platform for exploring issues primarily relevant to women. In 2001, it shifted focus to studying the relationships between men and women, masculinity and femininity, and now addresses issues of concern to men. We are part of the IPA's strategy, fulfilling our role in linking theoretical and clinical psychoanalytic ideas to the broader society and its challenges. This approach is crucial not only from a socio-cultural standpoint; experience has demonstrated that it often helps revise and update psychoanalytic concepts.

Each region has its own team that works to align the overall mission with diverse realities and specific needs.

One global administration purpose is to establish a strong and representative network among members of all associations, including the candidates.  By doing so, we encourage each group to follow the liaison member’s policy, allowing each society to align its understanding of COWAP’s goals and develop its own approach. On the other hand, we guarantee a shared sense of interest, responsibility, and mutual commitment, which are essential to identifying, developing, and belonging.

The European COWAP team, composed of a co-chair, two representative members, an IPSO member, and two consultants, develops a scientific program for all.

We are excited to announce that the 2026 program includes:

·        A pre-conference workshop and a panel at the main congress during the EPF Conference in Oslo

·        A conference in Heidelberg, Germany — to read the First announcement, please click here

·        A series of online workshops titled “Being a Woman Today” — for the January – June 2026 program, please click here

With our best regards,

Conceição Tavares de Almeida (COWAP overall chair)
Rotraut De Clerck (co-chair for Europe)
