Program Description
PCC’s 2024 Annual Melanie Klein Lectureship will focus on Dr. Christine English’s new book, Narrative of an Adult Analysis (2023), which is an exploration of the first record of Melanie Klein’s long treatment of an adult patient, Mr. B. The Narrative gives a vivid insight into Klein’s highly original way of working and provides detailed evidence for many of her theoretical ideas. It throws light, for example, on the dynamics of and obstacles to mourning; on what may drive a negative therapeutic reaction; and on the fundamental conflict between love and hate, first experienced in connection with the breast. It contains very moving material about the impact of the unexpected arrival of a sibling, and about the way in which love can become almost entirely obscured where hatred has instead been nurtured through grievance. During the day we shall explore these themes as we follow the unfolding of Mr.B’s analysis and reflect upon the relevance of this work for contemporary analytic practice. The program will include two presentations by Dr. English, emphasizing theoretical and clinical material, as well as thought-provoking discussion periods facilitated by members of the PCC community.
