Introduction

The Portuguese Nucleus of Psychoanalysis is a Provisional Society of IPA since July 2025.

Seven full members, five of which with training functions. Five candidates.

Short history

NPP was founded by four psychoanalysts following a crisis at the Portuguese Psychoanalytic Society that engendered a splitting. The aim of the Provisional Society  is  the training of psychoanalysts within a high level standard and rigorous ethical conditions, following the Eitingon training model.

It was founded on the 20th of October 2010 and recognized by the IPA as a Study Group.
Now is a Provisional Society of IPA.

Eitingon training model

A candidate for training is required to be in analysis (at least 4 sessions/week) with a psychoanalyst recognized by NPP  one year prior

Eitingon training model

A candidate for training is required to be in analysis (at least 4 sessions/week) with a psychoanalyst recognized by NPP  one year prior to starting the seminars at the Institute and all along the training process until being accepted as psychoanalyst. To follow two cases (4 sessions/week each) in a psychoanalytic process for at least two years under supervision. To participate in theoretical and clinical seminars during a four year program and go on attending other proposed  seminars in a continuous training base.

Present projects/program

The program includes clinical seminars, seminars around the Work of Freud, Abraham, Ferenczi, Anna Freud, Melanie Klein, Bion, Rosenfeld, Betty Joseph, John Steiner, Winnicott, Andre Green, Jean Laplanche, Etchegoyen, Baranger, José Bleger, Eugênio Gaddini, Joseph Sandler, Amati-Mahler, Jorge Canestri, Gregorio Kohon.

Guillermo Bodner, Joan Schachter, Béatrice Ithier, Annick Sitbon, Antonio Perez Sanchez, Luís Rodriguez de la Sierra, Riccardo Steiner are invited seminar leaders together with other NPP members, focusing in Theoretical and clinical issues.

Clinical seminars with presentation of cases under analysis by members and candidates are held regularly.

The program of the first year includes also a seminar on the Observation of Babies, directed by Gianna Williams on the year 2023/2024).

A  project we are trying to implement regards the integration of Psychoanalysis of Children within the main Program.

Free clinic / Councelling

The Social Clinic aims at providing consultation and guidance regarding the indication for psychoanalysis or other therapeutic treatment. Provide psychoanalytic treatment under special conditions of low fees.

Cooperations with other Institutions, Universities, etc. 

The NPP meets regularly every two years with the other psychoanalytic institutions in the Iberian Peninsula: The Portuguese Psychoanalytical Society, The Madrid Psychoanalytic Association, and the Spanish Psychoanalytical Society.
